Adaptogens (a.k.a. Adapt-to-life-again’s.) These are herbs called adaptogens because they provide support for our bodies (and minds!) to adapt to stressors and remain resistant to the physical effects of stress – helping you to maintain a state of balance. These herbs are some of my favorite medicines, because they are useful for so many conditions, and almost EVERYONE in our culture can benefit from some stress support.
Seniors face an even greater cumulative stress exposure, and any added stress can cause weakening fatigue, depletion and depression – adaptogens are tremendously helpful for seniors to support healthy aging and vitality. They are credited with longevity, and are known in Ayurvedic medicine as the ‘elixirs of life’! My personal favorite adaptogens are Rhodiola rosea, Siberian ginseng, and Holy Basil (or Tulsi). Each herb has its own unique profile, making some more beneficial for a particular individual than another, as some are more stimulating than others, and others like the mushrooms have immune supportive properties as well.
