What Can I Do About This Poor Air Quality?

Image
The fire and recent poor air quality in Northern California and Northern Nevada has affected many of us, with higher allergy and asthma symptoms, increased sinus infections, and often just increased irritation in the throat and lungs while breathing. This irritation is caused by the increase or particles in the air as well as higher acidity in the air from the burning material.
This decrease in air quality requires higher levels of antioxidants, so increasing the fresh fruits and vegetables that you are eating, particularly those that are high in Vitamin C and vitamin E will help to combat the effects to your nose, throat and lungs. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, kiwi, avocado, nuts, and leafy greens like kale and spinach all are high in these natural antioxidants. Fresh juices can be a wonderful way to get additional antioxidants as well, and sulfur-containing vegetables such as garlic, onions, broccoli and cauliflower all help your body process and protect your lungs from damage, especially if you are out working in the regions most affected.
Remember, you can still exercise but just try to stay indoors either in your house or at a gym where the air quality is a bit better.
